Speaking at Kisii University during a public lecture on judicial independence, Justice Muchelule said his engagement with the university community was intended to deepen understanding of the role of the Judiciary and create opportunities for interaction between students, academics and judicial officers.
“We are just emphasising the relationship between the Judiciary and the university,” Justice Muchelule said.
He was speaking to hundreds of students, lecturers, university staff and members of the public during the engagement, which focused on judicial independence, justice, good governance and the rule of law.
Justice Muchelule commended Kisii University, particularly its Faculty of Law, for its contribution to legal education and the preparation of students for careers in the legal profession.
He said the university had produced competent law graduates who could contribute to the legal profession and the administration of justice.
The judge encouraged the university community to continue supporting legal education and creating platforms where students can engage with members of the Judiciary and other legal professionals.
He said such engagements were important in broadening students’ understanding of the institutions and principles that underpin the administration of justice.
Kisii University said the public lecture provided an opportunity for the university community to reflect on the importance of an independent Judiciary in strengthening justice, good governance and the rule of law.
The university said interactions with distinguished leaders and professionals form an important part of learning beyond the classroom by exposing students and staff to practical experiences and perspectives.
It said such engagements were part of efforts to broaden the horizons of students and contribute to developing an informed and responsible society.
