The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Meru Regional Office on Tuesday brought together media and development partners to promote accountability in the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project (HoAGDP).

The engagement brought together representatives of the Catholic Diocese of Isiolo and the Kenya AIDS NGOs Consortium (KANCO) to strengthen media collaboration, promote transparent reporting and improve public access to information about the project.

Speaking during the meeting, MCK Meru Regional Coordinator Jacob Nyongesa emphasised the importance of responsible journalism in keeping communities informed about development initiatives.

“Development initiatives of this scale require continuous dialogue between project implementers and the press,” Nyongesa said, underscoring the need for timely information and objective reporting.

He highlighted the importance of cooperation between project implementers and journalists in ensuring that information about development activities reaches the public and enables communities to follow progress.

Sophia Nyaga of the Catholic Diocese of Isiolo said community participation was essential to the success of development programmes.

She noted that residents who have access to relevant information are better placed to articulate their needs, participate meaningfully in development activities and benefit from available opportunities.

The engagement also focused on ensuring that communities have the information necessary to monitor development initiatives and hold those responsible for their implementation accountable.

The HoAGDP engagement highlighted the role of collaboration between the media, public institutions and development partners in promoting transparency and ensuring that communities remain informed about projects affecting them.
