Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has issued a stark warning to Kenyan youth, urging them to take an active role in leadership and governance or risk inheriting a failing nation.
Speaking at the ACK Church during the Kirinyaga Diocesan Youth Celebration, Dr Matiang’i said the country’s future now rests squarely in the hands of young people, whom he challenged to rise above apathy and poor leadership choices.

“The Lord has blessed us with a beautiful country. What is destroying it are the mistakes we have made in managing it,” he said.
“Young people, you have a greater responsibility to make Kenya better than it is today.”
He commended the youth for what he described as a growing sense of unity beyond ethnic lines, noting that many have chosen to live “tribelessly” in recent months.
However, he cautioned that unity alone is not enough without political participation and accountability.
“You are more in number — politics is a game of numbers. Take charge of that game,” Dr Matiang’i told the gathering.
“Occupy leadership at all levels and stop allowing non-credible people to occupy positions of responsibility.”
The former CS further urged young voters to critically assess leaders and reject underperformance at the ballot.
“Help us clean up this country. Ask us tough questions. If we are not worth it, don’t give us the chance,” he said.
Dr Matiang’i warned that Kenya’s current challenges are largely self-inflicted, stemming from poor leadership decisions, but expressed confidence that the youth have the potential to reverse the trend through informed and decisive action.
