President William Ruto has unveiled a raft of development projects in Kisii and Nyamira counties, headlined by the groundbreaking of the KSh1 billion expansion and upgrading of Gusii Stadium.
Speaking during his visit to Kisii, the President said the government had already allocated KSh20 million to facilitate initial preparations for the project, including the relocation of residents to pave way for construction.

“We are rebuilding and expanding Gusii Stadium, giving it a more modern touch that will elevate the facility to global standards,” said Ruto.
“Our goal is to create an environment where our sportsmen can thrive and sustainably earn a living from their talents.”
The upgraded facility will have a 14,000-seater capacity, a FIFA-standard pitch and an eight-lane track, and is expected to be completed by April 2027.
Ruto thanked Kisii Governor Paul Simba Arati for coordinating the relocation process, including engaging key stakeholders such as AFC, who agreed to move to an alternative site.
“This has paved the way for the construction of a modern international stadium in Kisii,” he noted.
Governor Arati welcomed the project, saying the increased funding had boosted the stadium’s capacity from an initial 10,000 to 14,000 seats.
He also thanked the national government for supporting other infrastructure projects in the region.
“The expansion of Gusii Stadium is a major milestone for our people,” said Arati, adding that ongoing works in Nyanchwa, Daraja Mbili market and Nyambera were already transforming livelihoods.
Beyond sports, the President announced plans to construct eight new roads across Kisii and Nyamira, upgrade the Suneka airstrip—where a contractor has already been identified—and establish a university in Nyamira County.
He also outlined investments in markets, affordable housing and last-mile electricity connectivity aimed at boosting economic growth.
“Reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to transform the county through programmes and projects that address key challenges, uplift lives, expand opportunities and drive sustainable development for all,” Ruto said on his Facebook page.
The President also handed over a new bus to Shabana FC and later joined thousands of fans at Gusii Stadium to watch a friendly match between Shabana FC and Gucha FC.
