The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is enhancing school journalism clubs as a key platform for promoting Media, Information and Digital Literacy (MIDL) among learners.
The initiative equips students with the skills to navigate, analyse and create content in today’s complex digital environment.
To streamline previously fragmented efforts, MCK brought together journalism club patrons from the Nyanza and Western regions.

The meeting established a coordinated framework focused on skills development, ethical media engagement and alignment with the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum.

Speaking at the engagements, Kisumu Regional Coordinator Evans Teddy highlighted the shift from passive media consumption to responsible content creation, critical thinking and verification skills.
He emphasised that journalism clubs provide a practical way to develop a generation of informed, ethical and digitally competent communicators.
A major outcome of the initiative is the upcoming Inter-School Journalism Club Expo, scheduled for May 2026.

Unlike traditional competitions, the Expo will serve as a collaborative learning platform, promoting creativity, mentorship and real-world media exposure while strengthening MIDL competencies such as tackling misinformation and disinformation, storytelling and digital content production.
Regional leaders noted that the programme aligns closely with the Competency-Based Education approach by fostering transferable skills including communication, innovation and problem-solving, while also opening pathways for talent development in media and related fields.
