The government has warned motorists against using Ahero Bridge after River Nyando burst its banks, flooding sections of the busy Kericho–Awasi–Kisumu road and disrupting transport to Kisumu and its environs.
In a statement, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura confirmed that rising water levels had overflowed onto the roadway, creating a dangerous situation for motorists and other road users.

“Accordingly, in line with an advisory from the Traffic Commandant of the Nyanza Region, all motorists and other road users along this route are advised to use alternative routes,” said Mwaura.
Authorities have since diverted traffic at Timboroa through Lesos to the Kapsabet–Chavakali–Kisumu route as emergency measures take effect.
The warning comes amid ongoing heavy rains across western Kenya, which have triggered flooding in low-lying areas, particularly along the Nyando basin — a region historically prone to seasonal floods.
Transport officials warn that the situation could worsen if rainfall persists over the coming days.
Mwaura emphasized that the advisory is especially critical at night, when poor visibility makes it difficult to gauge the depth and force of the water.
“The Government continues to closely monitor the situation and will provide further updates as necessary,” he added.
Emergency teams remain on alert, with motorists urged to exercise caution and strictly adhere to traffic directives to avoid accidents.
