Nyamira County Hospital could soon be elevated to a Teaching and Referral Hospital after an inspection exercise conducted by a Kisii University delegation led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Nathan Ogechi.
The team, which included local leaders among them West Mugirango MP Stephen Mogaka, visited the facility to assess its suitability to host a School of Health Sciences under the newly launched Nyamira University College, a constituent college of Kisii University.

According to Prof. Ogechi, the inspection report will be presented to the Commission for University Education (CUE) with recommendations on the hospital’s capacity to support medical training and specialized health services.
The report is expected to be ready before next month’s planned presidential visit to West Mugirango.
If approved, the upgrade will enable the hospital to serve as a hub for both advanced patient care and medical education.
Students pursuing health sciences will gain hands-on training at the facility while residents of Nyamira and surrounding counties will access more affordable and specialized treatment closer to home.
MP Mogaka welcomed the development, saying it would ease the financial burden on families forced to seek services outside the county.
He appealed to health professionals from Nyamira and beyond to take up the opportunity to serve the community through the new institution.
Stakeholders praised Kisii University’s role in spearheading the project, describing it as a transformative initiative that will strengthen healthcare, expand education opportunities, and spur socio-economic growth in the region.
