The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has partnered with the German Embassy in Nairobi to boost press freedom and strengthen journalism’s role in governance and democracy.
On Thursday, MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo hosted Milan Klopprogge, the Embassy’s Head of Communications, for discussions on collaborative initiatives to promote media professionalism in Kenya.

At the centre of the talks was the need to support accurate and ethical election coverage ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Both parties agreed that the credibility of the electoral process depends heavily on responsible journalism, and pledged to build on Kenya’s long-standing ties with German institutions such as GIZ, DW Akademie, and DW, which have over the years supported media training and development in the country.
Omwoyo highlighted the sustainability challenges facing local media, noting that shrinking advertising revenues and the disruption caused by digital platforms have left many outlets struggling to survive.
He called for stronger stakeholder partnerships, investment in capacity building, and the adoption of supportive policies that would allow the media to adapt to the digital era without compromising professionalism.
The German Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to work with MCK and other partners in enhancing press freedom, media literacy, and fact-based reporting.
The collaboration is expected to focus on training programmes, fact-checking networks, and broader efforts to safeguard the integrity of information during election cycles.
