Children of Women Equality Empowerment Project (WEEP) mothers from the Kibera area were treated to a day of joy and reflection ahead of the Day of the African Child on Sunday.

The event, held a day early and organized by Africa HEART in partnership with Valor Christian High School from the USA, was punctuated with laughter, color, and camaraderie.

Held at Evergreen Park in Kiambu, the celebration featured a mix of activities, including painting, football matches, boat and horse rides, and a dramatization of the biblical tale of David and Goliath.

Children and guests shared meals, played together, and mingled freely, creating a warm atmosphere of unity and celebration.

The Valor team, comprising both students and teachers, engaged actively with the children, embodying the spirit of service and cross-cultural friendship.

The Day of the African Child, officially observed on June 16, commemorates the 1976 Soweto Uprising in South Africa, where thousands of Black students protested against apartheid-era education policies.

Hundreds were killed, including 13-year-old Hector Pieterson. Since 1991, the day has served as a powerful reminder of the need to uphold and advance children’s rights across the continent.

Africa HEART (Health Education Africa Resource Team) is a Christian humanitarian organization founded in 2000 by American nurse Vickie Winkler.

Through the WEEP program, Africa HEART empowers vulnerable women, children, and youth in Africa through healthcare, education, and economic strengthening initiatives.

Most of the women in the program are HIV-positive single mothers who have faced severe social and economic hardships, including being ostracized by their families after the loss of their spouses.

Valor Christian High School is a private Christian college preparatory school based in Colorado, USA, known for its emphasis on academic excellence, spiritual growth, and global outreach.

Sunday’s event was a testament to the transformative power of compassion, partnership, and the enduring hope of Africa’s children.
