The Government of Kenya has taken another bold step toward empowering the youth with digital skills by launching the Jitume Digital Hub at Mazeras Vocational Training Center (VTC) in Kwale County.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy (MICDE), aims to boost digital literacy and create employment opportunities for young Kenyans.
The launch was presided over by Cabinet Secretary Hon. William Kabogo Gitau, who was accompanied by the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Mr. Stephen Isaboke. The hub is part of the government’s broader strategy under the Digital Superhighway pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Through Konza Technopolis, the MICDE has equipped Mazeras VTC with 50 computers for training purposes. Already, 100 students have benefited from digital skills training at the institution. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the ICT Authority (ICTA).
Speaking during the launch, CS Kabogo announced that plans are underway to provide high-speed internet connectivity to Mazeras VTC and increase the number of computers to ensure equitable access to digital learning tools.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding the country’s digital infrastructure, noting that Kenya is rolling out 100,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable, establishing 25,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots, and setting up 1,450 ICT hubs—one in each of the country’s wards.
PS Isaboke emphasized that the Jitume Hubs are designed to equip youth with digital skills to enhance job creation and unlock opportunities in the growing digital economy.
The event was attended by local leaders, including Kinango MP Hon. Gonzi Rai, Nominated MP Joseph Denar, Msambweni MP Feisal Abdallah Bader, Speaker of Kwale County Assembly Hon. Seith Mwatela, Women Representative Hon. Fatuma Masito, Mazeras VTC Principal Mr. Oturi John Okoth, and members of the school board.
Earlier in the day, CS Kabogo joined Chief Justice Martha Koome at the launch of the Local Area Network at Msambweni Law Court. The project, also aligned with President William Ruto’s BETA plan, will help connect 74,000 public institutions—including courts—within the next two years.
The Universal Service Fund (USF), managed by the Communications Authority of Kenya, is playing a key role in bridging the digital divide, especially in underserved areas, to ensure that all Kenyans can access reliable and affordable internet connectivity.
