Information, Communications and the Digital Economy’s Cabinet Secretary (CS) William Kabogo and his Principal Secretary (PS) Stephen Isaboke are in Mombasa for a series of development and empowerment activities.

On Monday, Kabogo urged young Kenyans to take advantage of Jitume initiative and earn digital literacy, financial and communication skills.

The initiative, which is spearheaded by his ministry is being rolled out through Konza Technopolis and the  Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICTA), and supported by various partners.

Speaking during the commissioning of Mvita Jitume Digital Hub in Mombasa County, Cabinet Secretary (CS) William Kabogo said Kenyan youth were in want of those skills as they take up their role  in nation building.

“I’m truly inspired by the enthusiasm of Mvita’s youth, with a remarkable number already enrolled and actively utilising this transformative facility,” Kabogo, who was with Stephen Isaboke, the Principal Secretary (PS) in the ministry said.

“We celebrated the graduation of 248 young individuals who have completed training in digital literacy, financial literacy, etiquette, communication skills and more over the past month.”

PS Isaboke reiterated that the Jitume initiative is empowering our youth with access to digital services, skills and opportunities to create jobs through technology, and encouraged more Kenyans to  embrace it.

Present was Mvita MP, Mohamed Soud Machele and his Mbooni counterpart, Erastus Kivasu, Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Noor, and other stakeholders.

Launched in December 2022, Jitume Initiative seeks to equip youth with digital skills and connect them to online job opportunities.

The initiative aims to establish 1,450 digital hubs—one in each ward across the country.

These hubs provide access to digital devices, internet connectivity, and training in areas such as data entry, virtual assistance, AI, software development, and blockchain technologies.

The Jitume Initiative is a key component of Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), focusing on reducing youth unemployment by fostering a digitally skilled workforce capable of participating in the global digital economy.

Later, Kabogo and his team toured the Posta offices in Mombasa County and interacted with officials, where he indicated that a plan to revamp the Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) is ongoing.

“I saw first-hand the challenges and the opportunities that this strategic institution holds,” Kabogo said on his X account.

The CS also visited The East African Marine System (TEAMS) offices in Mombasa, where the Landing station manager Tom Otieno apprised him on the management of the station.

“We are keen to ensure Kenyans are empowered to take advantage of ongoing connectivity through digital skilling so that such strategic assets are utilised to the optimum,” Kabogo said.
