The latest chapter in their contentious alliance—the orchestrated impeachment of Gachagua by Ruto—has turned the deputy president into an unlikely hero of the underdog, particularly in his home region of Mt. Kenya.
This move, intended to weaken Gachagua, has instead propelled him into the role of a political martyr and, paradoxically, a much stronger figure in the region.
For those on the outside, Gachagua’s impeachment may appear as just another political maneuver in the high-stakes game of power that Ruto has mastered.
However, to the people of Mt. Kenya, the betrayal feels more like the sacrifice of a loyal ally, and it has deeply resonated with them.
