The two discussed preparations for the championships, including plans to upgrade sports infrastructure ahead of the competition.
Ruto said Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, which will host the championships, was undergoing major improvements ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
“The Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, the venue of the 2029 World Athletics Championships, is undergoing major improvements ahead of AFCON 2027 that Kenya is co-hosting with East African partner states Uganda and Tanzania,” he said.
“Further upgrades will be done ahead of the 2029 event in fulfilment of our commitment and our obligations,” the President added.
Ruto also highlighted Kenya’s commitment to combating doping, saying he had met the president of the World Anti-Doping Agency and that they had agreed to work towards eliminating doping and safeguarding clean sport.
Coe described Kenya’s successful bid as a major opportunity for the country, Africa and the global athletics community.
“It is a huge nine-day event, with 2,000 athletes and watched by a global audience of one billion,” he said.
The 2029 championships will bring thousands of athletes together in Kenya, placing the country at the centre of the global athletics calendar.
The meeting was also attended by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, World Athletics chief executive Jon Ridgeon and other Kenyan and World Athletics officials.
