Nyamira County has secured Sh1.7 billion in partnership with the national government to upgrade Nyamira County Referral Hospital and expand access to specialised healthcare services.
Governor Amos Nyaribo announced the funding on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, while addressing board members of county health facilities in Nyamira. He said the project would prioritise infrastructure development and the equipping of new hospital units.

The county government has already signed an agreement with the national government to facilitate the implementation of the project.
Nyaribo said the upgrade would double the hospital’s operational capacity and enable it to meet the standards of a Level Six facility once completed.
“We will have specialised clinics at our referral hospital. This will drastically reduce referrals,” he said.
The governor described healthcare as a priority for his administration, saying improved service delivery was among the key promises in his campaign manifesto.
“This is why provision of better health services in the county was at the top of my campaign manifesto,” he said.
Nyaribo also criticised his political opponents for claiming that his administration had done little to improve the health sector, arguing that some of his critics had not visited the referral hospital or other facilities to assess the changes made.
“Doubting Thomases who stay in Nairobi and other towns believe that nothing good can come out of Nyamira under my leadership. I challenge them to visit Nyamira Referral Hospital and see how we have given a facelift to the health facility in terms of infrastructure, medical equipment and service provision,” he said.
The governor said his administration had made progress in improving healthcare services and pledged to ensure adequate supplies of medicine across county hospitals.
He said the county had allocated Sh500 million to the Nyamira County Revolving Drugs Fund to support the supply of medicines to health facilities.
Nyaribo also cited partnerships with private-sector organisations and the national government as part of efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure.
He said the county had partnered with Safaricom to upgrade health facilities and was working with the Safaricom Foundation to construct mother and child hospitals at Nyangena and Nyasiongo, among other projects.

The governor added that his administration had worked with the national government to modernise Masaba North Sub-County Hospital in Keroka town.
He said construction of the Mother and Child Unit at Nyamusi Level Four Hospital was ongoing and was expected to be completed in about a month, paving the way for its commissioning.
Nyaribo further announced that the county was recruiting additional medical staff to strengthen service delivery across its health facilities.
He challenged hospital board members to ensure proper management of the facilities under their supervision and warned medical staff against absenteeism, saying their absence left patients suffering and undermined access to healthcare.
