The government has welcomed the extension of Kenya’s contract to host the World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally as a vote of confidence in the country’s sporting capacity.

Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi said the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) decision to retain Kenya on the championship calendar reflected growing international confidence in the country’s ability to stage major sporting events.

Speaking in Murang’a on Saturday, Mwangi attributed the achievement to investments in sports infrastructure and efforts to strengthen Kenya’s sporting ecosystem.

He cited international competitions held in Kenya over the past two years, including the Magical Kenya Open, HSBC SVNS, African volleyball championships, CHAN 2025, Kip Keino Classic, Nairobi Marathon and the World Taekwondo Junior Championships.

“The FIA released their calendar with Kenya being among the proud hosts of the 2027 World Rally Championship in March. This renewal of contract is a major show of confidence in our sports ecosystem and our capacity to stage world-class events,” he said.

Mwangi said Kenya’s co-hosting of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Uganda and Tanzania, alongside the 2029 World Athletics Championships, would further strengthen the country’s position as a destination for international sporting competitions.

Nairobi is also hosting the Rugby Sevens tournament, while the African Boxing Championships are scheduled to begin on October 15 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

The PS said President William Ruto’s administration was investing in sports infrastructure and improving athletes’ welfare as part of efforts to commercialise sports and expand opportunities in the sector.
