The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested a Kenya Power employee attached to the Kisii office over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe to restore electricity supply.

The suspect, identified as Caleb Owuor, allegedly demanded Sh35,000 from a complainant to reconnect electricity at premises in Nyanchwa Estate, Kisii, following a disconnection over alleged illegal connection.

According to the EACC, preliminary investigations led to an operation in which Owuor was arrested in Kisii Town while allegedly receiving Sh18,000, part of the amount he had demanded.

“The suspect allegedly demanded Kes35,000 to restore power supply following a disconnection at the complainant’s premises in Nyanchwa Estate, over allegations of an illegal connection,” the commission said.

The suspect was subsequently booked at Kisii Police Station, where he was processed and recorded a statement as investigations continued.

EACC said Owuor was later released on a cash bail of Sh20,000 pending the completion of investigations.

The commission said the arrest was part of its efforts to tackle bribery and corruption at public service delivery points.

“EACC remains committed to combating bribery and corruption at public service delivery points and will take firm action against individuals who abuse public office for private gain,” the commission said.

The commission did not indicate when the investigations would be completed or whether further arrests would follow.

The suspect remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty by a court.
