The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said this was a major breakthrough in the investigation into the murder.

According to a DCI press statement issued on Thursday, Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Mbobu, who was killed on September 9, 2025, along Magadi Road in Nairobi.
The DCI said detectives recovered a Ceska pistol that had allegedly been issued to Cheruiyot at the time of the incident. Ballistic examination subsequently established that the firearm was used in the shooting.
The agency described the finding as a significant development in the case, saying it “further strengthens the evidentiary trail” being assembled by investigators.
“Following an intensive and painstaking investigation over the past year, detectives have identified and arrested Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot,” the statement said.
The investigation has also implicated other individuals. The DCI said Inspector Kenneth Sang, who is currently at large, allegedly coordinated the operation in liaison with Rose Mbithe, who is in police custody.
Mbithe is also being investigated in connection with the murder of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, who was fatally shot on the morning of July 29, 2026, in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
The DCI said detectives are continuing to pursue other suspects and leads as they seek to establish the circumstances surrounding both killings.
“The DCI remains committed to pursuing all persons suspected to have participated in the murder, regardless of their position or affiliation, and ensuring that they are brought before the law,” the statement said.
Cheruiyot remains in police custody as he undergoes processing pending his arraignment in court. Inspector Sang remains at large, according to the DCI.
The agency said its investigations remain active, with detectives pursuing additional leads concerning the “full circumstances, motive, planning and execution of the murder.”
The DCI also extended its condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of Mbobu and Mutiso, saying it recognised the pain and anguish suffered by their loved ones.
“The Directorate extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the late Lawyer Mbobu and Dr. Mutiso,” the statement said.
The latest developments come a year after Mbobu was killed in what investigators described as a targeted attack while he was driving home from work along Magadi Road.
The DCI said specialised teams from the Homicide Directorate and forensic experts have been involved in reconstructing the events surrounding the killing.
