Government communication officers have been urged to adopt a coordinated and strategic approach in communicating government programmes and services to the public.

Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications Stephen Isaboke said effective communication was central to the implementation of the Whole-of-Government approach and required closer coordination among communication teams in Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

Speaking during a meeting with government communication officers, Isaboke said communication should go beyond passing information to the public and instead ensure citizens understand programmes, services and opportunities available to them.

“Communication should not be viewed merely as the dissemination of information but as a strategic function that connects citizens with Government initiatives, services, opportunities, and achievements,” he said.

The PS urged communication officers to use digital platforms, modern communication tools and data-driven approaches to reach different audiences more effectively.

He said communication strategies should take into account the different needs, expectations and information consumption habits of Kenyans to ensure government information reaches the intended audiences in a timely and accessible manner.

Isaboke also called for greater collaboration among government institutions to ensure consistency in communicating government programmes and responding to emerging issues.

“The public remains our most important stakeholder. Our communication must be deliberate, inclusive, innovative, and focused on ensuring that every Kenyan understands and benefits from Government programmes and opportunities,” he said.

Principal Secretary for Agriculture Dr Kiprono Rono, who also attended the meeting, said effective communication was important in connecting citizens with programmes in sectors that directly affect their livelihoods.

The discussions focused on strengthening communication across government institutions as the administration implements programmes in areas including agriculture, digital transformation, infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic empowerment.

The meeting also emphasised the need for communication officers to provide accurate, timely and relevant information while ensuring that public communication remains accessible to citizens across the country.
