Chief Justice Martha Koome has led the Judiciary in mourning retired High Court Judge Justice Omondi Tunya who died recently.
Koome described him as a distinguished judicial officer whose decades of service strengthened Kenya’s justice system and the rule of law.

In a condolence message issued on Tuesday, Koome expressed sorrow over the death of the former judge and conveyed her sympathies to his family, friends, former colleagues and all those who worked alongside him during his judicial career.
“It is with great sorrow that I have learnt of the passing of (Rtd.) Hon. Justice Omondi Tunya,” Koome said.
The Chief Justice praised Justice Tunya’s contribution to the administration of justice, noting that he began his judicial career as a magistrate before rising through the ranks to become a High Court judge.
According to Koome, Justice Tunya served with “distinction, diligence, and an unwavering commitment to the fair and timely administration of justice.”
She added that his years on the Bench made a lasting contribution to the country’s legal system.
“Through his faithful service, he contributed significantly to strengthening the rule of law and advancing the cause of justice in our country,” she said.
Justice Tunya served in the Judiciary for several decades, rising from the magistracy to the High Court before retiring and later returning to legal practice as an advocate.
During his career, he presided over a number of high-profile criminal and constitutional matters, particularly in the 1980s and 1990s, and also served in various High Court stations, including Mombasa and Eldoret.
Koome said the Judiciary stood in solidarity with Justice Tunya’s family during the difficult period of mourning.
“As the Judiciary mourns the loss of one of its former Judges, we stand in solidarity with his family during this difficult time,” she said.
She prayed that the family would find “strength, comfort, and solace in the cherished memories of his life and in the enduring legacy of his service to the people of Kenya.”
