Muthaiga Golf Club’s Eugene Wafula clinched his maiden Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) title after emerging victorious at the 2026 NCBA Ruiru Open, which concluded at Ruiru Sports Club on Sunday.
Wafula posted a tournament total of two-under-par 217 to win the fourth edition of the championship by a single stroke, capping a dominant three-day performance in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) event.

The victory marks a major breakthrough in Wafula’s amateur career and boosts his standing in the KAGC season race as players battle for valuable ranking points ahead of key regional and international tournaments.
Wafula laid the foundation for victory in the opening round on Friday with a brilliant three-under-par 70 featuring seven birdies. He followed it up with a level-par 73 on Saturday to retain the lead heading into the final round.
Despite mounting pressure from a chasing pack, Wafula remained composed on Sunday, carding a one-over-par 74 to finish at two-under-par overall and secure the title.
Speaking after his triumph, Wafula said the win was a reward for months of hard work and perseverance.
“It feels great to finally get my first win on the KAGC circuit. I’ve been working hard on my game and putting myself in contention, so to come through and get the victory means a lot. The competition was very strong throughout the week, and I had to stay patient and focused, especially in the final round. This gives me a lot of confidence heading into the rest of the season,” he said.
Former Nakuru Golf Club captain John Kamaisi mounted a spirited final-round charge, returning an impressive four-under-par 69 to finish second on one-over-par 218.
He shared the score with Tanzania’s Madina Hussein and Golf Park’s Josphat Rono, who tied for third place overall.
Rwanda’s Felix Dusabe finished fifth on 219, while Kiambu Golf Club’s Steve Kiaro placed sixth on 220.
New Finalists
Elsewhere, attention shifted to Western Kenya where golfers were competing in the 15th qualifier of the 2026 NCBA Golf Series at Kakamega Sports Club, seeking qualification for the season-ending Grand Finale scheduled for November 28 at Karen Country Club.
Elvis Mbagaya emerged as the Division One Men’s winner with 67 points, while Dr Beatrice Shikuku claimed the Division One Ladies’ title after returning 74 points.
In Division Two, Dr Protus Oketch won the men’s category with 71 points, while Dr Irene Ashioya topped the ladies’ section on the same score. Dennis Munyendo secured victory in the Division Three Men’s category with 70 points, while Carolyne Wambugu won the Division Three Ladies’ title with 64 points.
Among the juniors, Wayne Getanda claimed the Junior Boys’ title with 65 points, while Gianna Oketch won the Junior Girls’ category after posting 63 points. Bob Odhiambo recorded the highest score of the day, carding 85 points to win the Guest category.
The Kakamega event produced seven new Grand Finale qualifiers, with Elvis Mbagaya, Dr Beatrice Shikuku, Kunal Chandaria, Carolyne Wambugu, Dennis Munyendo, Immaculate Oketch and Gianna Oketch earning places at Karen Country Club later this year.
Both the NCBA Ruiru Open and the Kakamega qualifier are part of NCBA’s wider golf development programme, which supports the growth of junior, amateur, professional and club golf across Kenya.
