The Principal Secretary for Sports, Elijah Mwangi, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting Kenya’s sevens rugby team, Shujaa, as they chase greatness on the global stage.
Mwangi, who joined the Kenyan support base in Bordeaux, France, witnessed Shujaa’s emphatic 26-7 victory over Uruguay at the HSBC SVNS World Championship, a result that lifted hopes of promotion to the top division next season.

The outcome means Kenya’s fate now hinges on a Fiji win over the USA, which would confirm Shujaa’s place among the core teams for the next term.
Mwangi praised the team’s resilience and determination, saying, “We are grateful that being the last day we have made it and our boys have shown resilience and have won 26-5 against Uruguay,” he said.
“We hope that this win will help us to get the necessary points so that we can transit to the Division One.”
He emphasized the government’s support, noting, “Our boys have been well facilitated and demonstrated energy and I know going forward we have to make it.”
Mwangi added: “President William Ruto has given us all support that we need for our team. We are going to the Division One and more importantly, we are going to host the Division One in Nairobi.”
Head coach Kevin Wambua expressed gratitude to Mwangi for his steadfast backing, pledging to deliver the main cup trophy should the team secure promotion.
Shujaa’s spirited performance in France has reignited optimism, with the government and fans united in their belief that Kenya’s rugby stars are ready to rise to the next level.
