The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed significant progress in the probe into the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Senior Secondary School in Gilgil, Nakuru County, where sixteen students lost their lives recently.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the DCI revealed that forensic analysis of CCTV footage, combined with collaboration from teachers, led to the identification of six suspects linked to the arson. One suspect remains at large.

Post-mortem examinations conducted by Dr. Dorothy Njeri at Naivasha Sub-County Referral Hospital Mortuary established that all sixteen victims died from severe burns.
DNA reference samples were collected from families to aid in formal identification of the remains.
The DCI expressed gratitude to the public and school community for their cooperation during the investigation. “
We particularly appreciate the parents and students who have actively assisted the investigators by providing statements and supporting the review of evidence,” the statement read.
The agency also extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished a quick recovery to those still receiving treatment.
“The National Police Service reiterates its deepest condolences to the bereaved families, relatives, friends, and the entire school community,” the DCI noted.
Psychosocial support has been provided to affected families by the Kenya Red Cross, while investigators continue to gather evidence to ensure justice is delivered.
The DCI assured the public of its commitment to a professional and impartial inquiry, promising further updates as developments emerge.
