Final year students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery at Egerton University gathered for a gala dinner at Sarova Woodlands Hotel and Spa on Friday as they prepared to transition into professional veterinary practice.
The event brought together 44 Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVMS) students, faculty members, alumni, and stakeholders from the veterinary industry for an evening focused on mentorship, networking, and career development.

Speaking during the event, Faculty Dean Dr. Caleb Orenge said mentorship and industry exposure are essential in preparing students for professional practice.

Discussions during the gala centered on opportunities in the veterinary sector, emerging trends in animal health, and the future of veterinary medicine both locally and globally.
Industry representatives also shared insights on veterinary technology, pharmaceuticals, animal health services, and regulatory compliance.
Students were urged to uphold professionalism, ethical practice, and clinical excellence as they enter the next stage of their careers.
Dr. Orenge, who was recently appointed to the Kenya Veterinary Board by the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development for a three-year term beginning March 2026, said strong professional networks are important for young veterinarians.
The appointment positions the faculty among key institutions influencing veterinary training, policy, and professional standards in the country.
The gala dinner was coordinated by Dr. Paul O. Okumu and Dr. Tina Were.
Partners that supported the event included Cosmos Animal Health, Brooke East Africa Limited, and the Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA).
The students are expected to proceed to the mandatory one-year government internship programme before joining professional practice.
