Nominated Senator Essy Okenyuri has praised journalists in Kenya and across the world for their courage, professionalism and dedication to public service, while calling for stronger safeguards for media freedom.
In her World Press Day message, Okenyuri said journalists continue to work under difficult and often dangerous conditions yet remain committed to informing the public.

“In the pursuit of truth and accountability, many of them continue to work under difficult and often dangerous conditions yet remain committed to informing the public in time,” she said.
She added that their work remains central to society, noting that “their work is not only essential but also a sacrifice in service of society,” while recognising their role in ensuring citizens are informed and institutions are held accountable.
Okenyuri said press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy, stating that “a free, independent and responsible media is indispensable for the protection of human rights, the advancement of development and the promotion of peace and security.”
She further emphasized that safeguarding journalists is a shared duty, warning against intimidation and interference.
“We therefore remain firmly rooted in the position that safeguarding press freedom and protecting journalists from intimidation, harassment, violence and undue interference is key if society is to progress,” she said.
Okenyuri noted that protecting media independence is essential for transparency, accountability and public trust in governance.
