Veteran obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka, a director at The Nairobi Hospital and a board member of the Kenya Hospital Association, has died.
Dr Obwaka, 83, died on Friday, days after his controversial arrest.

Dr Obwaka had recently been arrested alongside other senior officials of the hospital in connection with the ongoing governance dispute that has rocked the prestigious facility.
He was among those detained at Muthaiga Police Station as investigators probed allegations linked to the bitter boardroom battles over leadership, financial management and the legitimacy of the members’ register.
His arrest had triggered outrage from medical professionals and legal bodies, with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) threatening industrial action over what it termed as “mysterious arrests” of senior hospital officials.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the Kenya Medical Association (KMA) also demanded clarity, describing the veteran doctor as a respected clinician and mentor.
KMA President Simon Kigundu described him as “a distinguished clinician, teacher, and mentor” who had served Kenya’s health sector for decades.
Dr Obwaka had built a robust medical career spanning decades, earning respect as one of Kenya’s senior obstetricians and gynaecologists.
Beyond clinical practice, he served as an admitting consultant at Nairobi Hospital and played a major role in healthcare leadership through the Kenya Hospital Association.
His death now adds a sombre turn to the already heated Nairobi Hospital crisis, where rival board factions have been battling for control of one of East Africa’s most prestigious medical institutions.
Court cases, suspended meetings and allegations of billions of shillings in missing funds have continued to deepen the standoff.
