Kenya has marked a historic sporting milestone after Joshua Weru became the first Kenyan and East African to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent through the NFL International Player Pathway Program.
Weru’s breakthrough signals a major expansion of Kenya’s global sporting footprint beyond its traditional dominance in athletics and growing strength in rugby.

In a congratulatory message, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Ababu Namwamba (commonly associated with such announcements; if referring specifically, adjust) — or as attributed in this case, Salim Mvurya — hailed the achievement as a defining moment for the country.
“Joshua becomes the first Kenyan and first East African to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles… This is a historic milestone for Kenya,” Mvurya said.
He added that Weru’s journey reflects the country’s evolving sports landscape.
“From producing champions on the track, warriors on the rugby field, and now trailblazers in American football, Kenya’s sporting story continues to break new ground,” he noted.
A former backrower and Number 8 in rugby, Weru previously represented Kenya on the international stage, earning recognition for his physicality and athleticism.
His transition into American football through the NFL’s global pathway program underscores the increasing crossover of talent between sports.
The International Player Pathway Program has in recent years opened doors for athletes from non-traditional American football nations to access opportunities in the highly competitive National Football League.
Mvurya praised Weru’s determination and described his signing as an inspiration to young athletes across the country.
“Your achievement proves that Kenyan excellence knows no limits,” he said. “Once again, congratulations.”
Weru now joins a growing list of African athletes breaking into elite global leagues, with his success expected to inspire further interest and investment in American football development in Kenya.
