Kenya has a unique opportunity to lead Africa in shaping an ethical, inclusive, and rights-based digital society, according to Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, Stephen Isaboke.

In a Facebook post following his remarks at the #WSISPlus20 High-Level Event in Geneva, Isaboke called for a united front among policymakers, tech companies, civil society, and citizens especially youth to close enforcement gaps, reform ambiguous laws, and promote digital literacy.

“Together, we can ensure that Kenya’s digital future upholds constitutional rights while promoting trust, resilience, and innovation,” he wrote.

His comments come at a time when Kenya is grappling with rapid digital transformation, rising concerns over data privacy, and the ethical use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

The WSIS+20 event, marking two decades since the World Summit on the Information Society, emphasized global cooperation in building inclusive digital ecosystems.

Isaboke’s call resonates with Kenya’s broader commitment to digital governance reforms, including the proposed Media Code of Conduct 2025, which seeks to align media practices with global standards on ethics and safety.

His advocacy also builds on recent efforts to empower youth as digital natives and amplify African narratives through responsible storytelling2.

The PS has consistently championed ethical communication, urging professionals to preserve empathy and African values in the digital age.
