A100-day Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) has been launched in Kiambu County to tackle the rising threat of illicit alcohol.
The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) will conduct the campaign following a directive from the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen.
The order targets manufacturers, retailers, and consumers of illegal brews and is in response to concerns voiced by residents and alarming data showing increased alcohol use among young people.
A national survey revealed that over 30 percent of university students have consumed alcohol, with 12 percent identified as current drinkers and more than 10 percent engaged in binge drinking.
Male students are reported to be disproportionately affected.
NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa said the initiative will be taken with utmost seriousness as the trend of alcohol abuse threatens the future of the youth.
The agency has pledged to fully support the directive by working closely with National Government Administrative Officers, the Kiambu County government, enforcement agencies, public health institutions, and community stakeholders.
These collaborations are expected to strengthen enforcement measures, disrupt illicit supply chains, and ensure the initiative achieves measurable impact.
In addition to enforcement, NACADA will scale up public education campaigns to sensitize communities about the dangers of consuming illicit alcohol.
The authority emphasized that monitoring and evaluation will be carried out throughout the 100 days to measure progress and sustain momentum beyond the campaign period.

Recent crackdowns in Kiambu and other counties have already seen large seizures of ethanol and other illicit products, demonstrating the government’s determination to address the issue.
The new campaign also builds on Kenya’s broader shift toward prevention and rehabilitation in the fight against drug and alcohol abuse.
NACADA has highlighted the importance of involving schools, churches, and community groups to provide long-term solutions.
The agency has further encouraged citizens to take advantage of its 24-hour toll-free reporting line to alert authorities of illicit brewing activities.
Recently, police officers from Kiambu County Headquarters conducted a crackdown on illicit brews in Kwambira, Limuru Sub-County and arrested two suspects.
“During the operation, 135 litres of chang’aa—packed in one-litre polythene sachets and stored in sacks—were seized from one suspect’s residence,” the National Police Service said in a statement.
“The second suspect was caught selling the illicit brew to the public.”

I walked through nearly every booth, […]
