Veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour will leave CNN in June 2027 after 43 years at the international news network, bringing to a close a career that has seen her report from some of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones.

Amanpour, 68, said she had made the decision after months of reflection and described her time at CNN as 43 “fantastic years”.

“After many months of thought and a few sleepless nights, I have decided to separate from CNN, my partner of 43 fantastic years!” she said in a statement.

She said she looked forward to pursuing new projects while continuing to support independent journalism.

“Remember: always be truthful, not neutral,” she said.

Amanpour, one of the world’s best-known international correspondents, has hosted her nightly interview programme, Amanpour, on CNN International since 2009.

She reduced her hosting duties in January 2025, presenting the programme a few days a week. From January 2027, it will air once a week before ending in May.

She will, however, continue reporting and travelling around the world for CNN until June 2027.

CNN chairman Mark Thompson announced her decision in a memo to staff on Monday, saying he and Amanpour had discussed her departure for several months.

“Like so many CNNers who will hear the news today, I’m very sorry to see her go, but I’ve come to accept that this is the right time for her, both personally and professionally,” Thompson wrote.

He described Amanpour as “one of the most trusted and beloved journalists anywhere” and said the network would celebrate her contribution before she leaves next year.

Thompson also thanked her for 43 years of journalism, loyalty and friendship on behalf of CNN’s leadership team.

In her statement, Amanpour paid tribute to the colleagues, programme teams and field crews who had worked with her throughout her career.

She recalled assignments covering the First Gulf War, the Bosnian War, the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran, among other major international events.

“It’s the teams and the camaraderie that counted so much,” she said, recalling their efforts to establish facts, examine evidence and highlight the human stories behind global events.

She said their work had helped CNN report the truth about the world “without fear nor favour”.

Amanpour’s Amanpour & Company, which airs on the US public broadcaster PBS, will end in December 2026.

She will also continue her podcast, The Ex Files, which she co-hosts with her former husband, Jamie Rubin. The podcast is produced by Global.
