Female journalists in Nairobi gathered in a celebratory mood as they graduated from a seven-month intensive training programme on artificial intelligence and digital tools.
The programme was designed to sharpen their skills for a rapidly evolving media landscape.
The fellowship was implemented by the International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT), in collaboration with the Kenya Correspondents Association (KCA) and other partners.
It ran from August 2025 to early 2026 and combined virtual training with mentorship.
Participants were awarded certificates recognising their commitment to embracing innovation in journalism.
“Congratulations to all the journalists who took time to be part of the fellowship,” said Oloo Janak, Secretary-General of the Congress of African Journalists (CAJ), capturing the spirit of dedication that defined the cohort.

Janak also spoke about the KCA partnership with IAWRT and the need for journalists to take advantage of emerging opportunities and to join journalists’ associations and other support groups.
Echoing similar sentiments, Rachael Nakitare of IAWRT urged journalists to embrace emerging opportunities with purpose rather than focusing solely on financial gain.
“I urge journalists to take advantage of emerging opportunities to acquire knowledge and requisite skills in the industry without paying much attention to the immediate monetary gains of those opportunities,” Nakitare said.

Speakers emphasised the importance of collaboration, continuous learning, and professional solidarity in navigating the opportunities brought by AI and digital transformation.
Janak said there were ongoing efforts to defend press freedom and strengthen support systems for journalists, including the Africa Media Lawyers Network, a joint initiative with the Pan Africa Lawyers Union.
He noted that the upcoming World Press Freedom Day conference in Lusaka would offer further opportunities to build alliances.
